Winter can be a challenging season for plants, whether they’re indoors or outdoors. Low temperatures, frost, reduced sunlight, and dry air from heating systems can weaken or even destroy them. However, with the right care, your plants can survive the cold months and thrive again in spring.
Here’s what you need to know for proper winter plant care.
1. Protection from Cold & Frost
For outdoor plants:
- Cover the roots with dry leaves, bark, or straw to provide insulation.
- Move sensitive potted plants closer to walls or under shelters, where they’re protected from wind and frost.
- Use special frost covers or protective garden fabric for the most delicate species.
For indoor plants:
- Keep them away from cold windows or drafty areas.
- Avoid having their leaves touch cold surfaces, which can damage them.
2. Adjusted Watering
Water is essential, but overwatering in winter can lead to root rot.
- Reduce watering frequency – most plants rest in winter and need less water.
- Water early in the day so the plant has time to absorb the moisture before nighttime temperatures drop.
- Always check the soil first: if it feels moist, skip watering.
3. Adequate Light
There’s less sunlight in winter, so it’s important to maximize exposure.
- Place indoor plants near bright windows, preferably facing south.
- Rotate them regularly to promote even growth.
- If you have many plants, consider using a grow light to supplement natural light.
4. Minimal Fertilising
In winter, most plants slow down their growth or go dormant.
- Avoid fertilising, or limit it to a minimum.
- Exception: if you have plants that bloom in winter, they may need light feeding.
5. Cleanliness & Preventive Care
- Dust the leaves regularly so they can breathe and photosynthesise more effectively.
- Remove dead or diseased leaves to prevent pests and fungal problems.
- Check often for insects, especially aphids or scale insects, which can thrive indoors during winter.
